An article in the New York Post dated Friday, November 27th, 2009, reported a ‘call to arms” from all religious leaders.
Archbishop Timothy Dolan, Archbishop of New York has issued a scathing indictment of secularism in the United States entitled, “The Manhattan Declaration: A Call of Christian Conscience.” Abortion is the lead issue! There is no question that the Obama administration and the media in general are ardently pro-choice. But the fact that so many Democrats in Congress are supporting public funding for abortion as part of health care reform has rocked the pro-life world. The questions is – should a country that values sincere conscience require taxpayers who believe abortion is murder to pay for the life-ending procedure? Obviously, millions of Americans say no!
Rhode Island Bishop Thomas Tobin has ordered Congressman Patrick Kennedy (son of the late Ted Kennedy) not to receive Holy Communion because of his support for abortion rights. Kennedy falls back on the “personal belief vs. public policy” argument. That’s essentially been the line taken by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Vice President Joe Biden, Senator John Kerry, Gov. Patterson, former Mayor Rudi Giuliani and the late Senator Ted Kennedy, Patrick’s father. Kennedy’s reply to Bishop Tobin – implicitly demanding that the bishop not teach the faith! WHAT? That’s what Bishop’s are consecrated to do! Teach! Bishop Tobin brought his order to Kennedy in private and only spoke out publicly when Kennedy implied that a faithful Catholic can believe whatever he darn well pleases! WHAT?
This Archbishop and this Archdiocese joins Archbishop Dolan of New York is “signing on” to the Manhattan declaration – the Catholic Church, in reality is simply the strongest repository for a fully public and reasoned argument: that unborn children, possessing the attributes attendant human life, deserve the protection of law.
